Plant Extinction & Resurrection

Plant Extinction & Resurrection

Plants are the primary ecosystem builders supporting all life on earth and profoundly shaping human societies, from food and medicine to art and culture. Yet 45% of all flowering plants are threatened with extinction. The wonder, fragility, and resilience of plant life are attracting strong public as well as scholarly interest. This series of online conversations brings together plant experts from different backgrounds who will share the important and captivating work they are doing to protect and foster biodiversity and—by extension—human diversity. This NYBG series expands the dynamic network of experts and institutions contributing to the burgeoning field of Plant Humanities, whose goal is to study and communicate the vital importance of plants to societies and ecosystems.

In the third session of this series, award-winning artists Alexandra Daisy Ginsberg and Debora Hirsch will discuss how their work draws from scientific research and practices to explore plant extinction and plant resurrection through art installations, AI-trained models, and a wide array of visual techniques. The conversation will be moderated by author Matthew Battles, author of TREE and Editor-in-Chief of Arnoldia, the journal of the Arnold Arboretum.
